The Kindle - What's so special about the Amazon Kindle?
|
What is Kindle? Kindle is a thin, lightweight, electronic reading device that you can take anywhere and download your favorite book, newspaper, or magazine. It was created by the net's largest bookseller, Amazon.com. You can download from a library of over 300,000 books, as well as many top newspapers, magazines, and even blogs. The kindle screen simulates paper, and you can read it even in bright sunlight with no glare whatsoever.
It also costs much less to download a book to the kindle than to buy the book in a store. You typically save 60-70%. You can store over 1500 books in your kindle, so it has plenty of space, and if you decide to buy a newer version of the kindle in the future, you can transfer all of the books to your new Kindle. Kindle Features: Slim: Just over 1/3 of an inch thick. As thin as most magazines. Lightweight: Only 10.2 ounces. Lighter than a typical paperback. Wireless 3G wireless uses cell phone networks so you can download new books anytime and anywhere a cell phone can be used. No monthly fees or hunting for a wi-fi spot! |
Fast Downloads Download a new book in under 60 seconds, no computer required.
Long Battery Life Read for days without recharging.
Read to Me Feature You can set the kindle to read to you when you get tired of reading. It even has a headphone jack.

How to use Kindle in the right way - YouTube Video
What's so special about the Amazon Kindle?
If you're ready, you can read all about it and buy a Kindle. If you need more information, here are some highlights and observations that first struck me from the video presentations and after reading about the Amazon Kindle.
- The screen is not backlit, so the display is easy to read, even outdoors in the sun. The display, in fact, gives the illusion of reading from paper. No glare like you get from a computer screen.
- It's small, compact, and lightweight (the latest Kindle- aka Kindle 4 - weighs less than 6 ounces), smaller than most paperback books. The controls are set up for both right and left-handed users and are very simple and convenient.
- You can do everything, searches, purchases, and downloads, without a computer or even a hotspot - and without a service plan or monthly fee. Now, that's quite a selling point!
- The battery charge lasts for days. "Read War and Peace on a single charge," or so they said for the original Kindle. The Kindle 2 battery lasts 25% longer; turn off the wireless connection and read for two weeks without a charge!
- I like the cute little dog-ear bookmark feature. I like the adjustable text size, perfect for those of us who need reading glasses.
- It's interesting that everything you buy or download to your Kindle is backed up at amazon.com, so you can access it in the event that something happens to your reader.
- You can subscribe to newspapers or magazines with the new editions updated and delivered automatically. There's a built-in dictionary, as well as a word search feature, and a subscription to Wikipedia is included.
- The Kindle Keyboard holds 3500 books and even the $79 Kindle holds 1400, no memory card needed!
- The Amazon Kindle really is handy and non-cumbersome, light and easy to use, perfect for anyone on the go - or even just for convenience at home. For me, trying to handle a book comfortably while reading in bed can be difficult. The size, shape, and weight of the Kindle makes it a perfect solution.
- Did we mention that Kindle talks? Oh, yes. Text to speech, in a female voice or a male voice, your choice. The quality is quite good, too.
